Love is such an interesting emotion. It comes in different forms and is experienced in different ways, ranging from butterflies in your stomach or nervousness when you’re with someone to pure joy when you see someone walk in a room. Though it’s also a feeling that can fade, true love never fails.
John 3:16 is commonly referenced in church and sums up in a nutshell Christ’s purpose for coming to Earth. Because this verse is so well known, its profundity may be too often overlooked and underappreciated. Think about it. The thought that God, the Creator of the universe and the Sustainer of all life, would come to Earth as a man to live, be tempted, and eventually die to save sinners like you and me is the greatest love story the world will ever know.
The Bible tells us that “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13), which is exactly what Jesus did for sinners on Calvary. Try to put yourself in Jesus’ shoes and reflect on the amount of love it would take for you, right now, to die for someone close to you.
We often get so caught up in our human conception of love that we feel we have to earn the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, but that is so far from the truth. The truth is, we can’t earn any of it. It is by grace alone that we are saved, and by believing in His sacrifice and repenting of sin, we never have to fear losing God’s love. When you’re in Him, His love for you extends beyond anything you could ever imagine. So if you ever find yourself feeling lonely, depressed, or unsure about anyone’s love for you, remember that Jesus died so that you could have free access to the Father’s love for an eternity in His house.
